Scalable Video Coding with Interlayer Signal Decorrelation Techniques

چکیده
Scalability is one of the essential requirements in the compression of visual data for present-day multimedia communications and storage. The basic building block for providing the spatial scalability in the scalable video coding (SVC) standard is the well-known Laplacian pyramid (LP). An LP achieves themultiscale representation of the video as a base-layer signal at lower resolution together with several enhancement-layer signals at successive higher resolutions. In this paper, we propose to improve the coding performance of the enhancement layers through efficient interlayer decorrelation techniques. We first show that, with nonbiorthogonal upsampling and downsampling filters, the base layer and the enhancement layers are correlated. We investigate two structures to reduce this correlation. The first structure updates the base-layer signal by subtracting from it the low-frequency component of the enhancement layer signal. The second structure modifies the prediction in order that the low-frequency component in the new enhancement layer is diminished. The second structure is integrated in the JSVM 4.0 codec with suitable modifications in the prediction modes. Experimental results with some standard test sequences demonstrate coding gains up to 1 dB for I pictures and up to 0.7 dB for both I and P pictures.

Adaptive Residual Interpolation: a Tool for Efficient Spatial Scalability in Digital Video Coding
Scalable video coding enables multimedia content providers to cope with the heterogeneity of networks and multimedia devices. In this paper, we introduce the novel concept of Adaptive Residual Interpolation (ARI) as a tool for efficient spatial scalable video coding. This new approach is based on the interlayer prediction of residual data. We have implemented the ARI tool by making use of the J...
متن کاملInter-resolution Transform for Spatially Scalable Video Coding
Spatial scalability of video signals can be achieved with critically sampled spatial wavelet schemes but also with an overcomplete spatial representation. Critically sampled schemes struggle with the problem that critically sampled high-bands are shift-variant. Therefore, efficient motion compensation is challenging. On the other hand, overcomplete representations can be shift-invariant, thus p...

This paper presents a new 3-D subband coding framework that is able to achieve a good balance between high compression performance and channel error resilience. Various data transform methods for the decorrelation of video were examined and compared, including subband filtering, discrete cosine transforms, discrete wavelet transforms, and lapped transforms. The coding stage of the algorithm is ...
متن کاملImprovement of Inter-Layer Motion Prediction in Scalable Video Coding
In this letter, we propose an enhanced method for interlayer motion prediction in scalable video coding (SVC). For inter-layer motion prediction, the use of refined motion data in the Fine Granular Scalability (FGS) layer is proposed instead of the conventional use of motion data in the base quality layer to reduce the inter-layer redundancy efficiently. Experimental results show that the propo...
